Until very recently, our knowledge about the neural basis of cognitive aging was based on two disciplines that had very little contact with each other. Whereas the neuroscience of aging investigated the effects of aging on the brain independently of age-related changes in cognition, the cognitive psychology of aging investigated the effects of aging on cognition independently of age-related changes in the brain. The lack of communication between these two disciplines is currently being addressed by an increasing number of studies that focus on the relationships between cognitive aging and cerebral aging. This rapidly growing body of research has come to constitute a new discipline, which may be called cognitive neuroscience of aging. The goal of Cognitive Neuroscience of Aging is to introduce the reader to this new discipline at a level that is useful to both professionals and students in the domains of cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, neuropsychology, neurology, and other, related areas. This book is divided into four main sections. The first section describes noninvasive measures of cerebral aging, including structural (e.g., volumetric MRI), chemical (e.g., dopamine PET), electrophysiologica l (e.g., ERPs), and hemodynamic (e.g., fMRI), and discusses how they can be linked to behavioral measures of cognitive aging. The second section reviews evidence for the effects of aging on neural activity during different cognitive functions, including perception and attention, imagery, working memory, long-term memory, and prospective memory. The third section focuses on clinical and applied topics, such as the distinction between healthy aging and Alzheimers disease and the use of cognitive training to ameliorate age-related cognitive decline. The last section describes theories that relate cognitive and cerebral aging, including models accounting for functional neuroimaging evidence and models supported by computer simulations. Taken together, the chapters in this volume provide the first unified and comprehensive overview of the new discipline of cognitive neuroscience of aging.

Evolutionary cognitive neuroscience covers all areas of cognitive neuroscience, from nonhuman brain-behavior relationships to human cognition and consciousness, and each section of Evolutionary Cognitive Neuroscience addresses a different adaptive problem. diverse topics for an exciting science
It is an exciting time in neuroscience. As the realisation dawned in recent years that evolutionary ideas can be fruitfully applied to the brains of various species. Along with the experimental tools that enable the testing of useful models of the brain.
The book's diversity of papers reflects accurately the intellectual ferment. One example might be the rise of evolutionary game theory. Standard game theory arose with von Neumman and others, and was originally only applied to human subjects. But a chapter on SPFit delves into how players evolve in geological time, optimising their reproductive odds. Thus the promise is to see how behaviour can be explained in the context of playing a long game.
Another very topical issue in the book is mirror neurons. Covered all too briefly here, given the amount of research that is ongoing. If there will ever be another edition of this book, perhaps more space could be allocated to it?

Great.
Emotion had been largely ignored in cognitive neuroscience until some year ago (with LeDoux, Damasio, Panksepp leading the way) Now, there are various attempts to restore emotion as a very important and fruitfull line of research. Cognition cannot be understood stripped of emotion. This book is a collection of the many issues in affective neuroscience. There are various papers dealing with its neuronal correlates, its place in the cognitive hierarchy, with value, its conscious expression, among many other things. Emotion is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, and cognitive neuroscience is trying to explain it from many prespectives. This book is the culmination of these attempts. Must-read for anyone interested in emotion and neuroscience.

I have long been awaiting a comprehensive text on developmental cognitive neuroscience. This book contains 41 superb articles, convering a variety of areas from neurobiology to language and cognition. It is a very good book for those wanting a quick introduction to this field. A very enjoyable book to read!

Excellent in places
I tend to read a lot of neuropsychiatry books for work and this is the latest from Jeff Cummings - an author who seems to do little wrong! The production value on this book is very high - quite a few color illustrations are used. The text is, in general, sensible and useful but there are some minor inaccuracies and some topics not covered. In places the depth is not really adequate and it may not offer quite the same coverage as competing volumes. Overall, excellent in places, but some omissions - therefore I would give it ok(3stars). I am sure the next edition, will offer more.

As a result, research efforts were split between disciplines such as cognitive psychology, linguistics, and artificial intelligence that investigated behavior while disciplines such as neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and genetics experimented on the brains of non-human animals. In recent decades these disciplines integrated, and with the advent of techniques for imaging activity in human brains, the term cognitive neuroscience has been applied to the integrated investigations of mind and brain. This book is a philosophical examination of how these disciplines continue in the mission of explaining our mental capacities.

Whatever your own positions on all this, perhaps you can appreciate the excitement in the air. For the first time, philosophy has hard experimental observations to cogit over. And the problem of consciousness is surely one of the fundamental unknowns in science.

Good book for computational neuroscience
I am a mathematician and economist interested in how human brain works. To me, (so far) this is the best book using equations to describe the overall picture of brain functions. Even though it might not touch in-depth research topics, I am sure it gives anyone interested in neuroscience very solid foundations on which more advance topics are built. (It actually invites me to more in-depth research topics, such as reinforcement learning, reward-punishment system, etc.)
If math is your familiar language (says, system of differential equations and Bayesian probability), and you are interested to know, in technical details, how the brain functions, this book is for you. Then, I think, you can go into research topics of your interests after finishing reading this book.

"Theoretical Neuroscience" is an in-depth introduction to modeling of neural systems from the chemical/electrical processes within neurons, up through small networks of neurons. It is a little dry, but provides a wealth of information on modeling the electrophysical and computational properties of neurons.

Good starting point for undergraduate students
This book covers a wide range of different and important subjects of this field and provides by this a good overview to students new in neuroscience. On the other hand side, the topics discussed are not described thoroughly, but stay on the surface. This maybe no big problem for undergraduates who try just to understand the basics but certainly this is not satisfactory for more advanced students or researches.
In my opinion, this book blurs the view of the reader by presenting results about experiments and theoretical models side by side in a way that no fair and solid discussion is provided indicating clearly the limitations and problems of current models. By this, one could get the feeling that the presented models are more than tool to analyse data. However, exactly this is not true for most of the models as can be seen by the fact that these models can also be found in other areas than neuroscience with other interpretations.

Theoretical Neurosciences from a Computational Perspective
This text will become a standard course book for Graduate Schools in Computational Neurosciences. You need to know advanced engineering mathematics & probability theory to be able to understand this book. Dayan & Abbott model primary visual cortical, MT, LIP, and Motor cortical neurons as single units, but also as populations (clusters) of firing cells. They discuss Bayes Theorem, probability theory as it applies to the brain, and parietal lobe function as well. They derive all the equations associated with these models for the student so that more advanced parts of the book are comprehensible. The book is not meant to be a general Neuroscience book, but rather a course book about neuronal modeling, computational neurobiology, and neural engineering. It serves these three purposes well. In my opinion, this is the best written account of neuron modeling out there for the graduate student and researcher. Methods in Neuronal Modeling by Christof Koch is the other great book on this subject. If you own these two books you should be able to advance in high level neural modelling. There are numerous equations and formulae of interest throughout each chapter in these two volumes. The price of 39.00 USD for the hardcover is really quite a bargain.

on many aspects of computational neuroscience. It works very carefully
through the fundamental assumptions and equations underlying large
tracts of contemporary quantitative analysis in neuroscience. It is
an ideal introductory book for those with a quantitative background,
and is destined to become a standard course book in the field.

So you think you are afraid of some math?
This book encapsulates in a single text a large body of knowledge by the author and others over the past two decades on the use of geometrical techniques to both classify and study a large range of single neuron models. While much of this material is known to "experts" in the field, the value of this text is i1) teaching this dynamical systems perspective on single neuron dynamics to generations of new students and 2) educating non-mathematicians into both the utility and use of these theories. Many other texts and papers on this topic leave non-mathematicians "in the dust" shortly after the introduction, but Eugene's excellent use of figures to explain concepts geometrically as well as mathematically enables a PhD student in engineering or quantitative biology to fully appreciate what is going on, not to mention seasoned experimentalists.

An Interesting Book on Spiking Mechanism and Nonlinear Dynamical System
The goal of Izhikevich's book is to study "the relationship between electrophysiology, bifurcations, and computational properties of neurons." The book also introduces the fundamental concepts of nonlinear dynamical system such as (1) equilibrium, (2) stability, (3) limit cycle attractor, and (4) bifurcations. Actually, it is a good introductory book on applying nonlinear dynamical system on scientific research. The primary subject of the book is the spiking (excitability and bursting) of neurons. By utilizing graphs or phase portraits to demonstrate the mechanism of the spiking generation of neurons, the author makes the readers understand both the spiking mechanism and the concepts of nonlinear dynamical system with ease.

Focusing on the central problem of simple reaction time, it examines the most basic possible sequence of perception-decision-action. The task is to press a button with one hand as soon as a patch of light is detected in the peripheral visual field. When the patch appears in the visual field opposite the responding hand, there must be interhemispheric transfer prior to response. But transfer of what--a visual input code? A cognitive decision code? A motor response code? Combining animal models, normal human studies, and clinical evidence, the authors apply anatomical, physiological, and behavioral perspectives to this question. The emerging view is that the corpus callosum consists of many parallel interhemispheric channels for communication and control, and that every transfer channel is context-dependent and modulated by attention.

I am a neurologist. This is the single best book I have read for providing the physiological and anatomical basis for human cognitive behavior. Each chapter is written by an outstanding neuroscientist.

Not the editorial quality I expected
I checked this book out from our library to see if it would meet my needs as an in-depth introduction and more to the neurosciences. I have a number of MIT press/Bradford books and expected quite a bit from this one. I was impressed with the breadth and range of topics and the quality of scholarship, but the incredible number of typos, particularly in the second section, left me steamed. Those poor authors who had the spelling of their names butchered in print have my sympathy. These typos include some in the diagrams, which lead to confusion. I expect a better quality of editing from a large professional university press. I bought Principles of Neuroscience (Kandel) instead. My advice would be to check out a copy of the Gazzaniga from your library and go over it to see if it is acceptable to you before you spend [...] on it.

Absolutely spectacular achievement
I think I can claim to be probably the only clinical neurologist who has read both this book and its first edition cover to cover, which really reflects the fascination of the articles more than incredible compulsivity on my part. The book is divided into 11 sections--development, plasticity, sensory systems, motor systems, attention, memory, language, higher cognitive functions, emotion, evolution, and consciousness, with anywhere from 8-15 articles in each section (total 94 chapters!), averaging around 15 pages each, and a helpful introduction written by an expert for the sections. There are also a large number of color illustrations. For the most part, the articles are very clearly written reviews, and would be appropriate for the upper undergraduate or graduate level student. The emphasis is obviously more on neuroscience than on clinical medicine, though helpful correlates to neurological patients can be found in many chapters. Michael Gazzaniga has once again done a masterful job in assembling contributors, and it is wonderful to see how much the field has advanced since the first edition of this book was published in 1995. For anyone with more than a casual interest in the field, this book is a MUST HAVE!!

Great Book, Not an introduction to the field
I am a freshman in High School and after taking a semester course in Biology Honors and a little guidance from my teacher I set out to do my final human anatomy project on how drugs affect the synaptic regions in nerve cells. Using this book and the Internet i completed the project successfully. The thing about this book is that if you already don't have some understanding of the nervous system, this book may be confusing, yet if you want the latest in the field and not to much history and coverage on the supposed "Mind-Body Problem" get this book. This book is a great text for showing the cell processes and overall nervous system.If you just want a basic understanding of how the nervous system works, get another book, yet if you want to comprehend and do some nice research papers i would recommend this book. This book is a compilation of most the research in the cognitive neurosciences and is in depth and comprehensive as books get. Sure its size and weight may have caused some back strain when in my bookbag, but it was worth it. Check your library for this book before you pay out if you just need it for a paper or project, but if you want to do some learning like I did then buy it.

The Cognitive Neurosciences
The Cognitive Neurosciences by M.S. Gazzaniga is an exhaustive (and I mean exhaustive) collection of articles representing major theories in each field of cognitive neuroscience. The book focuses on cognitive neuroscience as opposed to something like neuropsychopharmaco logy or neuroanatomy. It also weighs a ton and a paperback version would be most welcome. Being comprehensive, there is a good deal of depth, but not the kind of depth you'd see in a text on a specific area (e.g., memory). That being said, this is the high-mark for this kind of comprehensive book. My favorite book in the area. Stephen Cox
